McConnells Mill, Moraine announce September programs

A kayaker paddles on Lake Arthur at Morraine State Park earlier this month.

Moraine and McConnells Mill state parks have announced five events.

- Wetlands and Wildlife Paddle is planned for Wednesday at Moraine.

The program is for anyone ages 12 and older; children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Participants will learn about the wetlands and the critters that inhabit them while paddling through the park.

The paddle will begin at the McDanel’s Launch Area on the North Shore at 10 a.m. and continue until noon. Kayaks and equipment will be provided.

- Wildflower Hike for Girl Scouts is set for Sunday at Moraine.

This hike will allow Girl Scout troops and families to explore Pennsylvania native plants and learn about their identification, history and uses.

The hike will begin at 1 p.m. at the Five Points Group Tenting Area on the North Shore and continue until 3 p.m.

- Wildflower Walk will be Sept. 16 at Moraine.

This hike will travel through the butterfly garden trail and teach participants about native Pennsylvania plants.

The hike is less than two miles and will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. starting at the McDanel’s parking lot on the North Shore. Participants are encouraged to dress appropriately.

- Porters Cove Paddle is scheduled for Sept. 23 at Moraine.

The program is designed for those ages 12 and old; children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Participants will kayak on Lake Arthur while exploring and learning about the wildlife that calls the lake home.

- Kayaks and gear will be provided, and the event will start at 9:30 a.m. at Bear Run Launch on the South Shore and continue until noon.

Matchless Fire is set for Sept. 24 at McConnells Mill.

The park naturalist will demonstrate how to start a fire with the flint and steel and bow and drill methods. The program is scheduled from 4 to 5:30 p.m.

All park events require pre-registration which can be done by calling the park office at 724-368-8811. Registration for the Porters Cove Paddle and Matchless Fire open Sept. 10.

All events will follow COVID-19 and social distancing guidelines and participants will be required to wear a face mask or covering.
