Rock guns for 2 soccer crowns
The Slippery Rock University men's soccer team will make its first PSAC championship game appearance in 20 years Saturday at California (Pa.) University of Pa.
The teams will meet at 1 p.m. at Roadman Park.
Under fourth-year coach Matt Thompson, second-seeded SRU (12-7-1) is in the PSAC playoffs for the first time since 1985 as well.
California (14-7) is the top seed in the tournament and is playing in the title game for the fourth time in six years. The Vulcans have never won the championship, however.
Junior midfielder Sheldon Graham leads the Vulcans and the PSAC with 12 goals. Teammate John Pazehoski, a junior forward, has 11 goals and 25 points on the year.
California goalkeeper Eric Greaves, a Slippery Rock High School graduate, has a 14-5 record with four shutouts, a 1.39 goals against average and a .764 save percentage.
The Rock features a balanced attack with five players scoring at least four goals each. Forward Gary Saunders has six goals, midfielder Dave Keller five.
Nick Christy, Ed Mocarsky and Justin Hollm have scored four goals each.
Rock goalkeeper Chris Cook is 9-3-1 with six shutouts, a 0.97 goals against average and an .833 save percentage.
SRU and California split their regular season matchups, the Vulcans winning 4-3 at home and The Rock claiming a 1-0 victory on its home turf.
Both teams endured grueling semifinal wins to reach the title match. California earned a 3-2 overtime win over West Chester while The Rock won a tiebreaker shootout over Lock Haven.
The winner of Sunday's game could qualify for the NCAA Division II tournament as well. The top three teams from each of eight regions qualify for the national tourney.
California comes into the game ranked third in the Northeast Region. SRU is tied for fourth with Lock Haven.
The Rock's lone PSAC men's soccer championship occurred in 1974, a 2-1 win over East Stroudsburg.
Butler High School graduate Julie Linaman scored the game's lone goal as the No. 2 seeded Slippery Rock University women's soccer team knocked off No. 1 seed Indiana (Pa.) 1-0 in a PSAC semifinal game Friday.
Another freshman, goalkeeper Jen McCormick, picked up her 11th shutout of the season.
SRU (12-5-3) advances to the PSAC championship game at 1 p.m. Sunday at Eastern winner Kutztown, which defeated top-seeded West Chester 1-0 Friday.
SRU won the PSAC championship in 2003.
