Becker, Gallo win District 10 wrestling titles
Jeff Becker and Trevor Gallo each captured District 10 Class AA Wrestling Championship titles over the weekend at Sharon High School.
Becker (145 pounds) defended his title by defeating Jason Brown of Reynolds 9-6 in the finals.
Becker (22-0) pinned Justin McGrillis of Greenville in just 1 minute, 6 seconds in his first match and followed up with a 12-2 major decision over Jay McNulty of Mercer to reach the finals.
Gallo (171) decisioned Andrew Kimmy of North East 5-3 in the championship bout.
Gallo (23-1) had pinned Colin Brown of Jamestown in 1:00 and decisioned Dustin Kelly of Mercer 5-0 in his first two matches.
The Rockets will also be represented at the regionals next weekend by Jeff Kline (130).
Kline earned a pin over Alex Sieberkrob of Harbor Creek in 5:21 before losing to eventual champion Matt Dunn of Reynolds 9-1.
Kline rebounded with wins over Dylan Powers of Eisenhower (pin, 2:13), Tim Rose of Maplewood (14-9), Cory Bice of Mercer (6-5) and Craig Johnson of Grove City (3-2), the latter for the third-place consolation finals.
"The way (Becker and Gallo) are wrestling, they are certainly on track to do well," said Slippery Rock coach Fred Powell. "They are ahead of schedule as far as conditioning and sharpness. They're peaking at the right time."
Mars will have two wrestlers advancing to next Friday and Saturday's Southwest Regionals at the Cambria County War Memorial Arena in Johnstown.Adam Smetana (119) and Dave Pisarcik (189) each captured their fifth-place consolation final matches to grab the final berths.Smetana decisioned Ty Vanella of Mt. Pleasant 8-6 and Pisarcik won by injury default over Josh Fulton of Elderton.Matt Perri (112) lost his fifth-place consolation match to Dustin Brodmerkel of South Side Beaver 12-2 to just miss advancing to regionals.
Butler's Jessica Schnur placed fifth and Liz Rhodaberger was sixth at the WPIAL Class AAA Championship meet at Pine-Richland High School Saturday.Schnur finished with 359.05 points and grabbed the final berth of those advancing to the PIAA Championships at Bucknell University in three weeks while Rhodaberger (350.70) missed the cut.The meet was won by Lindsay Davis of Bethel Park (437.75). There were 36 girls taking part in the Class AAA meet."In talking to Ken (Butler diving coach (Bedford), He was very optimistic they both would do well," Butler swim coach Amber Schmeider said. "I had high hopes and we figured we'd get one, maybe two there."This has been great for both of them and Jess is capable of doing better than she did," Schmeider added.In the boys meet, Butler sophomore John Rhodaberger was 12thout of 26 competitors."Last year, he was cut in the first round and now, as a sophomore, to make it to the final round (the top 12 compete) was great," said Schmeider.In the WPIAL Class AA finals, Knoch's Caitie Coco was fifth with a score of 308.85 and will move on to the state finals. Nikki Perella of Hampton won the event with a total of 396.95.
Kendall Butch placed second in the pole vault by clearing 12 feet, 7 inches to lead the Butler High School girls track team at the PIAA Indoor State Championships at Penn State University Saturday.Butch set a Butler record in the event and also qualified for the Indoor National Track and Field Meet March 12-13 in Maryland.Butch was also ninth in the high jump (5 feet, 2 inches) while Emily Chiappini was sixth in the pole vault (11-0) and Amanda Malecky was ninth in the 800 (2:19.72).Other top performers included Lea Renwick (60 meters, 8.23 seconds) and Sarah Thiebaud (triple jump, 34-9; high jump, 5-0).
