Start sinks Sox

Not much went wrong for Butler in Wednesday’s 7-0 victory over Kokomo.

The Jackrabbits turned the tables on the BlueSox Thursday night.

Kokomo plated five first-inning runs and was never threatened in a 12-5 Prospect League defeat of the BlueSox at Kelly Automotive Park.

“I told the guys that we are capable of playing much better than we did Wednesday and the standings prove that,” said Kokomo manager Matt Howard. “It’s all about turning the page and having a short memory.”

Butler missed an opportunity to pull to within two games of the first-place Jackrabbits (13-9) in the East Division standings. The BlueSox (8-12) are now four games back with 10 games remaining.

They found themselves in a deep hole before picking up their bats against Kokomo.

Butler’s Dillon Sunnafrank was making his first pitching start in 22 days and the rust was evident. The first three batters he faced reached base, including a walk and a hit-batsman. After striking out two in a row, Sunnafrank allowed three consecutive singles to Brody Andrews, Josh Zbierski and Chris Amato and just like that, the Jackrabbits were up 5-0.

“He threw some bullpen sessions, but that is still a long layoff,” said Sox manager Jason Radwan of Sunnafrank. “It’s tough to come in like that. He struggled to throw strikes and got behind guys.”

The Sox began their attempt at a rally in the bottom of the first when Jamie Switalski singled home Tyler Sullivan. But Butler would never pull closer than four runs, despite tallying 12 hits.

James Meeker and Kristian Webb went 3-for-5 and 3-for-4, respectively, but the Sox left 10 men on base, including leaving the bases loaded in the sixth.

“For the second straight night, we hit the ball well,” said Radwan. Butler tallied 11 hits in Wednesday’s win. “But we also left a lot of guys on base. We fell behind early and tried to battle back, but when you give up five runs in one inning and four in another, that makes it very tough.”

Kokomo’s 4-spot came in the top of the fifth. The Jackrabbits entered the frame leading 7-3 and chased reliever Shawn Holman from the game.

Kokomo starter Sean Kiley did not pitch well — allowing four runs on 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings — but his offense made sure that he never trailed and ultimately, lifted him to the victory.

Jack Herzing, Switalski and Colin Macon also pitched in relief for Butler.

The Sox will pick up a suspended game in the top of the fourth inning against West Virginia tonight at the KAP, beginning at 5 p.m. with Butler leading 4-3.

Shortly after the conclusion of that contest, the two teams will play their regularly-scheduled game.
