Police: Altercation preceded shooting in North Buffalo Township
An Armstrong County man is in prison without bail facing homicide and weapons charges following the alleged shooting death of another man in North Buffalo Township on May 22.
Nicholas Alexander Fortuna, 24, of Kittanning is being held in the Armstrong County Prison for allegedly causing the death of Jonathan Blackburn, 23.
State police charged Fortuna with criminal homicide, possession of an instrument of crime and possession of a weapon, alleging he shot Blackburn following a confrontation at 251 Wilson Road.
Fortuna, Blackburn and two other people were hanging out together at the property when Fortuna and the other two people began leaving around 10 p.m., police said in an affidavit.
Blackburn attempted to stop one of the other people, a 21-year-old woman, from leaving and asked her to stay, but she left, police said.
He then directed his attention toward Fortuna and the other person who were inside Fortuna’s pickup truck. Police said Blackburn hit the driver’s side mirror, yelled at Fortuna and turned to walk away.
When Blackburn was near the rear of the truck, Fortuna allegedly held his handgun out of the driver’s window and fired a shot toward the ground, police said.
Blackburn then returned to the driver’s window and reached into the truck, and Fortuna allegedly fired multiple rounds at Blackburn, striking him several times, police said.
After the shooting, Fortuna and the other person went down the driveway, where they told the 21-year-old woman about the incident, police said. The woman called 911 and all three people remained at the scene until police arrived.
Police said they executed a search warrant and found a black .40-caliber Heckler & Koch pistol and multiple spent bullet casings in the truck.
According to an obituary in Thursday’s Butler Eagle, Blackburn was a 2016 graduate of Armstrong High School and was self-employed with his father at Blackburn and Son Construction.
The incident remains under investigation, police said.
