Two Butler County commissioners are headed to the nation's capital Thursday.

Commissioners Leslie Osche and Kim Geyer will take a tour of the White House and meet with various federal officials in Washington, D.C.

The White House Office of Intergovernmental Affairs invited Pennsylvania county commissioners to attend the conference and tour.

Attending commissioners were asked to submit a list of issues relevant to their respective counties.

“Obviously, transportation and infrastructure is a big deal,” said Osche, chairman of the Butler commissioners.

She said election reform is another issue.

Shari Brewer, county elections bureau director last month testified at a state hearing about the need for reform to lessen the ever-increasing costs to hold elections.

Due to recent confusion among the public about whether the county is a “sanctuary” county, the commissioners are seeking a clear definition of what constitutes a “sanctuary.”

“We're trying to get clarification from the White House,” Osche said.

The county prison board earlier this year altered the wording of a prison policy in an attempt to eliminate any confusion.

County officials stressed there is cooperation with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, just that the county prison cannot detain anyone without a court order.

Osche said Thursday's event is one the county cannot afford to pass up.

“It's a unique opportunity,” she said. “They're trying to reach out.”

Geyer agreed.

“We're excited to represent Butler County in this capacity,” she said.

County Commissioner Kevin Boozel had a prior commitment, so he cannot go to Washington.

Geyer last month wrote a letter to President Donald Trump relaying the challenges facing the county.

She praised his administration for having an open-door policy meeting with county commissioners.

“To get a pulse on what's happening,” Geyer said.

Osche said they may not be able to meet Trump.

“There was no mention of that,” she said.

However, Osche said other prominent officials may be available during the conference portion of the day.

“It would be exciting if we would see department secretaries,” she said.
