Eagle County Amateur wide open

Cranberry Highlands hosts 22nd annual golf event Aug. 14

CRANBERRY TWP — Entries have been slow to come in for the 22nd annual Butler Eagle County Amateur golf tournament Aug. 14.

But that is nothing out of the ordinary, says Eagle Amateur committee member Rob Voltz.

“We’ve got about 30 officially signed up so far,” Voltz said. “This event has always been one in which golfers sign up late.

“I’ve talked to many of our past champions and a number of them are planning on playing. It’s always a wide-open event.”

This year’s tournament — a single day, 18-hole stroke play event — will take place at Cranberry Highlands Golf Course. Shotgun starting times are available at 7:45 a.m. and 1:15 p.m.

Entry fee is $80, which includes a cart. Entry forms are available in various issues of the Butler Eagle, at area golf courses or by calling Voltz at 724-822-4189. Walking the course will not be permitted.

The Eagle Amateur was last held at Cranberry Highlands in 2013, when Sean Knapp carded a 6-under-par 64 to win by five strokes.

Knapp has yet to sign up for this year’s event.

“The normal cost to play Cranberry Highlands on a weekend is $60 or so,” Voltz said. “To play in a tournament there for $80 is pretty good.

“That course is well-manicured. It’s a great golf course, a great venue.”

Since the Eagle Amateur began in 1995, only two golfers have won it more than once. Knapp is a five-time champion (2008-10, 2012-13) and Mark Young won it in 1995 and 2002.

Scott Vice is the defending champion, winning last year by carding a 7-under-par 63. He defeated runner-up Voltz by six strokes.

“He was a new golfer who moved back to Butler from out of town,” Voltz said. “That’s what can happen in this tournament. There are so many good golfers out there.

“If you hit the ball decently and make your putts, you’ve got a shot. It’s all about who’s on that day.”

Marissa DeCola is the defending women’s champion. Last year’s champions by flight were Steve Chiappini (first), Paul Marovich (second) and Ron Vodenichar (third), respectively.

The Eagle Amateur had a full field of golfers (nearly 180) the last time it was held at Cranberry Highlands.

“We’re expecting a big turnout again,” Voltz said.
