City man receives 11½ to 23 months

A city man who attacked a stranger with a knife was sentenced to serve 11½ to 23 months in prison.

Weston George Atwell, 46, pleaded guilty to simple assault with a deadly weapon enhancement and terroristic threats. He was sentenced Thursday by Butler County Judge Timothy McCune.

According to court records, a 47-year-old woman was seated on a bench outside the Butler Transit Authority terminal on East Cunningham Street about 12:20 p.m. May 11, 2014.

The woman, who had never before met Atwell, said he sat down next to her and cut her on her left arm with a knife. The cut required 12 stitches.

A short time after the incident, officers caught Atwell walking in the 300 block of South Washington Street. He had a key chain knife with a 2-inch blade.

Atwell, who was given credit for the time he spent in prison awaiting resolution of the case, also must serve 36 months of probation after he is paroled.

The judge said the victim, who was not identified, submitted a statement about how the crime impacted her. But he did not read it during court.
