Pennsylvania ready for federally-funded internet expansion
Gov. Tom Wolf said a recently created authority is ready to manage at least $100 million the state will receive from the federal government to expand high-speed internet service.
Wolf said the Pennsylvania Broadband Development Authority, which was created through a law passed in December, is ready to expand internet service using the $100 million from the federal Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment Program. He said at least 500,000 state residents do not have internet access.
The money is part of a $45 billion “Internet for All” initiative authorized by President Joe Biden through the U.S. Department of Commerce. The goal of the initiative is to provide affordable, reliable high-speed internet for everyone in America by the end of the decade. The initiative is made of up three programs to build internet infrastructure, teach digital skills and provide necessary technology to ensure that everyone—including communities of color, rural communities, and older Americans—has the access and skills needed to use the internet. Hundreds of millions in additional funding will be made based on the forthcoming internet coverage maps from the Federal Communications Commission.
