BUTLER TWP— The 44th annual Butler Area Sports Hall of Fame Banquet takes place April 25 at the Butler Days Inn.

This year's inductees include William Bauder from the deceased era, Dave Florie and Bob Quigley from the first era, Martha Altmire and Jeff Messer from the second era, and Troy Nunes and Curt Schnur from the third era.

Five of the inductees put together coaching careers after their playing days. Three of them, Messer at Slippery Rock University, Florie at Butler High and Schnur at Knoch High, remain active as baseball coaches.

Tickets for the banquet are $20, $10 for children 12 and under, and are available at Bill's Beer Barn or from any active Hall of Fame committee member.

A brief synopsis of each 2009 inductee follows:

A 1926 Portersville High graduate, he participated as a baseball player, manager and league official for more than 50 years.Bauder was an Eagle County League player or manager from 1932 to 1974. He served as league president for 12 years.Bauder bought property in Middle Lancaster in 1946-47 to build his own ballfield. Now a softball league field, the facility was eventually named Bauder Park. Bauder threw out the first pitch at the opening ceremony.

A 1958 Ellwood City High graduate, Florie played two seasons of basketball at Geneva College and lettered four years in baseball there.He served as varsity basketball coach at Seneca Valley for five years and was a game official for 30 years.Florie coached baseball at Seneca Valley for 16 years, winning a state championship there in 1995.Florie sent 103 Seneca Valley players on to college ball and guided Butler High to the WPIALbaseball playoffs last year.

A 1961 Butler High graduate, Quigley scored 898 points for the Golden Tornado basketball team, a record that stood for 27 years.He averaged more than 20 points per game his junior year and played a year of football at Butler. Quigley went on to play two years of basketball at Clarion State College.

A 1967 Moniteau graduate, Altmire could play only intramural sports in high school because girls varsity athletics had not yet arrived.She went on to play two years of college basketball at Anderson University and coached girls basketball at Olean (N.Y.) High from 1971-2006.The first coach in the program's history, Altmire won 18 league titles at Olean and compiled a record of 484-222, her win total ranking among the top five all time in New York.

A graduate of Lee High School in Massachusetts, Messer has been head baseball coach at Slippery Rock University since 1985-86.During his career at SRU, Messer has won 15 PSACWest titles, two PSACchampionships, four NCAAregional crowns and has made four appearances in the Division IIWorld Series.A 10-time PSACCoach of the Year, Messer began this season with a 724-416-4 career record at The Rock.

A 1998 Butler graduate, Nunes was a standout quarterback, basketball player and track and field athlete for the Golden Tornado.He played on a Western Final Butler basketball team and reached the state finals as a member of the Tornado's 400-meter relay unit.Nunes went on to play quarterback at Syracuse University, ending his career among the Orange's top five in all-time completion percentage, completions, touchdown passes, career yards passing, yards per attempt and yards per game.

A 1991 Butler graduate, Schnur was an outstanding pitcher for the Golden Tornado and put together a stellar career at the University of Delaware.He was a four-time American Legion All-Star and was drafted in the 34th round by the Atlanta Braves.Schnur has been pitching for Saxonburg of the Eagle County League since 1996 and has averaged 10 wins and a 1.92 ERAover the past 10 years.Schnur has been the head baseball coach at Knoch for the past decade.
