Historic Harmony president Rodney Gasch gives a tour of the Harmony Museum, pointing to an opening that shows the building's original construction, earlier this week.

The Harmony Museum will resume tours starting Tuesday.

“We're excited to have people come back into the museum and learn about history,” said Rodney Gasch, president of Historic Harmony.

While Butler County remains in the green phase of Gov. Tom Wolf's plans to reopen the state's economy, the museum, 218 Mercer St., will operate from 1 to 4 p.m. Tuesdays to Fridays.

Tours will be limited to the size of one family or one group of four. Reservations can be made by calling 724-452-7341.

“You don't need to reserve far in advance,” said museum administrator Kathy Luek. “You can even call from the front door.”

The museum's tours are guided by a staff member. Luek said after each group finishes the tour, staff will sanitize high-touch areas between groups.

“To protect museum staff, masks will be required,” Luek said.

There is a cost associated with the tour, but children under age 5 are admitted free. Museum members are also admitted free.

The guided tour takes the visitor through each of the museum's three buildings.

“It's like stepping back in time,” Gasch said.

Gasch said much of the tour revolves around the settlement of the area and the Harmonist Society settlement of the town. He said going through the tour should give visitors insight into how the early settlers lived and worked, especially the Ziegler Log Cabin exhibit.

“We have this cabin outfitted with 200-year-old antiques, so you really get a sense for how people lived,” Gasch said.

The museum tour also touches on George Washington's travels through the area in 1753 and a wine cellar built in 1809 from locally quarried stone blocks.

Gasch said as the state continues to move forward through the pandemic, the museum will be able to offer more. “We hope to be able to have some modified events soon,” he said.
