Seneca board votes on student distribution

JACKSON TWP — Seneca Valley student distribution in the 2022-23 school year for those in kindergarten through sixth grade was approved at Monday night's board meeting.

Due to the opening of the new Ehrman Crest Elementary/Middle School in Cranberry Township this fall and the closing of Evans City Elementary/Middle School at the end of the current school year, the board had demographic and data studies completed by two companies to determine how to redistribute students in those grades.

While a plan was in the offing for student distribution, board member Jim Nickel at last week's school board meeting advocated for a group of parents in specific streets in three Cranberry Township housing plans who want their 10 students to attend Ehrman Crest next year instead of Connoquenessing Valley Elementary School as planned in the distribution plan.

Parent Kayla Burgert also implored the board last week to modify the plan to send the students to Ehrman Crest.

On Monday, two options were presented for a vote on student distribution.

One was the original plan, which did not receive a motion or second.

The other was the original plan modified to accommodate the 10 students on Cherrington Drive, Whispering Oaks Drive and Windsor Court, which was put forth by Nickel and Burgert.

The board voted unanimously to approve that option.

“I'm very happy,” Burgert said after the vote. “I feel that the board actually listened to parent feedback and parent concerns and made adjustments accordingly.”

Student distribution information is available on the district's website, svsd.net.
