SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University head football coach George Mihalik is retiring after 28 seasons.

He announced retirement at noon today.

Mihalik ends his career with a 197-111-4 overall record. His win total ranks fourth all-time in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference and was fourth among active NCAA Division II head coaches this season.

During his career, Mihalik guided The Rock to eight PSAC Western Division championships and six trips to the NCAA Division II playoffs. His teams won the PSAC title in 2014 and 2015.

Mihalik has been inducted into five halls of fame: SRU Athletic in 1997, Butler Area Sports HOF in 2001, Cambria County Sports HOF in 2006, Pennsylvania Sports Western Chapter in 2012 and Bishop Carroll High School in 2012.

He has been involved with SRU football as a quarterback, assistant coach or head coach for 43 of the past 44 years. Mihalik was quarterback of SRU’s PSAC championship teams in 1972 and 1973.
