State Police, Butler8:20 a.m. Friday — A Clarion County man was hurt when he lost control of his sport utility vehicle and struck a utility pole and tree on Route 308 in Marion Township.Benjamin C. Blauser, 30, of St. Petersburg, who was wearing a seat belt, suffered minor injuries. Police cited him for careless driving.
State Police, KittanningSunday — Police reported that someone filed a false federal tax return in the name of a South Buffalo Township man.The man told police he learned he had been victimized Feb. 25 when the IRS rejected his e-filing because it said it already had received his return for 2015.Authorities believe the unknown identity thief stole the man’s Social Security number and used it to file the bogus rerun.Police noted the IRS has been notified and is investigating the case.5:45 p.m. Sunday — Curt C. Shaffer, 41, of Worthington was arrested on a warrant after he was stopped for suspected shoplifting at the Hilltop Plaza Walmart in East Franklin Township.Police said Shaffer tried to steal $270 worth of groceries at one of the self-checkout registers. A search of his coat pockets turned up $25 worth of chocolate that he also had allegedly taken at the store.Police said they learned Armstrong County Probation had a warrant for Shaffer, who was placed in the county jail. He is charged with retail theft in connection with the suspected shoplifting.7:48 a.m. Thursday — A Templeton woman was issued five traffic tickets after the sport utility vehicle she was driving crossed the double-yellow center line while rounding a curve on Clay Avenue and struck another SUV nearly head-on in Pine Township, Armstrong County.Police said Simonne B. Bennett, 24, drove away to her home about one mile from the wreck. The other driver, Michael S. Atherton Jr., 21, of Templeton, also drove to his home just 500 feet from the crash.Bennett was cited for driving with a suspended license, driving without insurance, driving an unregistered vehicle, driving a vehicle without valid inspection and disregarding traffic lanes.6:46 a.m. Wednesday — Colleen M. Keener, 43, of East Brady lost control of her SUV on ice- and snow-covered Route 268 in Sugarcreek Township and rear-ended another SUV that was stopped on the road. Amber L. Bortmes, 20, of Karns City was the other driver.
State Police, MercerSaturday — A burglar stole several power tools valued at a combined $784 after breaking into an unlocked storage shed at a home on Cherry Street in West Franklin Township.Among the property taken was a Dewalt drill, Dremel took kit, Black & Decker cordless drill, Milwaukee hammer drill, Craftsman drill and a Brinkmann Q-beam spotlight.The burglary and theft happened between 10 p.m. Friday and 7 a.m. Saturday. Anyone with information is asked to call 724-543-2011.10:29 p.m. Friday — A 47-year-old Mercer woman, who police did not identify, was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence on Route 208 in Pine Township, Mercer County.Police said they stopped the woman after she pulled out of a parking lot at the nearby Premium Outlets without her headlights on and traveled west on Route 208.1:35 a.m. Friday — Four bald tries were blamed when a pickup truck driven by Daniel D. McCoy, 45, of Grove City spun out and collided with a tractor-trailer on Interstate 80 just west of exit 24 in Wolf Creek Township.No one was injured in the wreck but both vehicles had to be towed. Elvir Smakovic, 44, of Erie was the other driver.Police cited McCoy for driving a vehicle with worn tires and disregarding traffic lanes.
