Sunday — Kelly J. Barnhart, 42, of Butler is accused of passing seven checks totaling $668.84 at Hovis Auto & Truck Supply that were written on a bank account with insufficient funds. Barnhart is charged with bad checks.4:33 a.m. Dec. 28 — Shane E. Dunham, 19, of Butler and Dakota M. Taylor, 20, of Summit Township were caught allegedly throwing ice at the T.W. Phillips building on North Main Street and breaking into a car on nearby East North Street.Both suspects are charged with theft from a vehicle, conspiracy and disorderly conduct.
10:55 p.m. Saturday — Dustin J. Cunning, 25, of Evans City allegedly assaulted 50-year-old Jeffrey W. Kennedy on Cherry Blossom Road in Connoquenessing Township. The suspected attack left Kennedy with a bloody nose and cut lip. Cunning is charged with simple assault.Saturday — Police are investigating the alleged rape of a 22-year-old Butler woman in Slippery Rock.The woman told police that she had gone to a party with friends in the borough. She said that while there she got sick and lied down on a bed. When she awoke in the morning, according to a police report, she found her pants pulled down.The woman reported the alleged crime to police and went to the Butler Memorial Hospital for an examination. Investigators said they have no suspects. Police released no other information about the investigation.Dec. 24 — Police filed a felony charge against Denny J. Winner Jr., 19, of Middlesex Township after he illegally tried to buy a gun Nov. 1 at the Butler Commons' Walmart.Winner is prohibited from owning a firearm because he has a protection from abuse order against him, according to court documents. But in completing the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives form to buy a gun, police said, he denied that he was subject of any protective order.Winner is charged with providing false information while attempting to buy the gun, a felony. Additionally, he faces a misdemeanor charge for making a false statement.
11 a.m. Saturday — James McKee, 22, of Plum, Allegheny County, was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence of a controlled substance on Route 28 in South Buffalo Township.
2:15 a.m. Sunday — Samuel A. Gargasz, 24, of Grove City was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence on Interstate 79 in Jackson Township, Mercer County.8:50 p.m. Wednesday — Xiaoping Xu, 54, and Shenglin Qin, 51, both of Flushing, N.Y., were hurt when their tractor-trailer jackknifed and caught fire on Interstate 80 in Lackawannock Township, police said.Xu was driving west in the right lane when he lost control of the rig on the slush-covered road. The truck traveled off the north side of the highway and hit a tree. The rig caught fire after the crash with the tractor facing east and the box trailer facing west.Police said Xu was cited for driving too fast for conditions.
