Shaler girls rout Butler lacrosse
BUTLER TWP — Butler girls lacrosse coach Annie Tigano knew Shaler had some big scorers.
Unfortunately, she got to see a little more than she expected.
Titans freshman Shannon Lynch netted eight goals and junior Courtney Ambrozic added five scores in a 19-3 section victory over the Tornado at Art Bernardi Stadium.
“We knew they were a very well-rounded team,” Tigano said of Shaler. “We just did not do what we needed to do to stop them.
“(Shaler) won all but three draws and were passing, catching and doing everything very well,” Tigano added.
Lynch opened the scoring just 52 seconds into the game before Butler's Maggie Dellen answered with 23:24 left in the first half off an assist by Olivia Semmelroth.
Shaler (3-1), however, closed out the half with 12 consecutive goals to take a 13-1 lead with five scores coming from Lynch.
“Shannon is new this year at midfield and has come together as our top scorer,” Shaler coach Jen Perestock said.
“We have 13 freshmen on the team, so we're a very young team. We have two seniors and four or five juniors ... so we're starting out new.
“I can't wait to see what we can do in the next couple of years,” Perestock added.
The Titans were missing senior Elizabeth Casertano, a University of Oregon recruit who is out with a foot injury.
Still, Shaler showed it had plenty of weapons already as Nellie Phillips added two goals and McKenna Ash, Bethany Snider — a Thiel recruit — and Andra Lebanc also added first-half tallies.
The mercy clock went into effect with 5:35 left in the first half when the Titans took a 10-goal lead.
Butler's Casey Murdick opened the second half with a goal before Lynch added a pair of goals and Alyssa Ball and Ambrozic one apiece for a 17-2 lead.
Semmelroth accounted for the Tornado's final goal before Lynch and Ambrozic closed out the game's scoring.
“Shaler's one of the better teams in our section,” Tigano said. “We made them look like a very good team, which they are. We just needed to stay with them.”
Notes: Butler goalkeeper Kyleigh Jarosinski made four saves while Titans netminder Saige Greygor had one save. ... Butler will return to action Wednesday when it hosts Yough.
