Pioneers will take an ugly victory

BUTLER TWP — As 35-point wins go, this one wasn't exactly pleasing to the eye.

The Butler County Community College women's basketball team forced 37 turnovers on defense, but it struggled on offense, shooting 36 percent from the floor in a 57-22 win over Franciscan University of Steubenville Monday night in the Pioneers' tip-off tournament.

"You win by 35, but it was ugly," said BC3 coach Sean Carroll. "I just told the girls, 'If I asked you guys to do stuff you couldn't do, then call me crazy.' But these girls have all stepped up and made these shots in the past. I'm not down on them."

There certainly was nothing to get down about on the defensive end of the floor.

The Pioneers (4-0) used a smothering press to force mistake after mistake out of the Barons.

Franciscan had 20 turnovers in the first half and only seven points. It shot 2-of-23 in the first 20 minutes and 8-of-38 in the game.

"Franciscan — they were out there trying," Carroll said. "But, obviously, we had a lot more talent than they did.

"I don't want to discount (the turnovers) — I think we forced some of them — but you can't count on that every night," Carroll added.

The turnovers helped BC3 build a 21-7 lead at the half, and the Pioneers led by as many as 39 late in the second half.

"All of our girls were struggling on offense, but they didn't let it affect them on the defensive end," Carroll said. "Sometimes you see that."

Brittany Beatty paced the Pioneers with 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting.

Butler High School graduate Ashley Nocera added 10 points and Knoch grad Liz Burgard had eight.

Shannon Onderko added seven points and seven assists for BC3.

Sam Karns and Michele Ritchey, Nocera's teammates at Butler High, saw significant minutes.

The three former Golden Tornado are going to be a big part of the Pioneers' success this season, Carroll said.

"The three girls from Butler have been a great addition," Carroll said.

But they were never on the court at the same time.

"Now that you say that ..." Carroll said.

That may help one of BC3 biggest problems so far this season,Carroll said.

"We just seem like a half-step off," Carroll said. "We're missing some easy shots. I think that's just not being together a whole lot yet this season.

"We're not a finished product. It takes time," the coach added.

The Pioneers will take on CCAC Boyce in the championship game at 8 p.m. today.

Franciscan will take on Jamestown Community College in the consolation game at 6.
