Mother charged after daughter, 2, wanders

Butler police say a young mother slept while her 2-year-old daughter wandered off.

The child — walking in adult shoes — was hard to miss as she toddled alone on the sidewalk Monday morning along busy West Cunninham Street, authorities said.

She was found unharmed, but police Thursday charged her mother, Harlee Ann Losser, 18, of Butler, with child endangerment.

A customer at Family Video on the 500 block of West Cunningham Street noticed the small child shortly before 11 a.m., police said, and alerted the store manager.

The manager ran across the street and secured the girl, who was dressed in a “thick shirt, socks and a wet pull-up diaper,” according to court documents.

The tot also had adult sneakers on her feet.

She later told an officer that the shoes belonged to her grandfather, documents said. Police notified the Butler County Children and Youth Services agency.

Officers subsequently learned that Losser had been staying at her parents' house near the store.

She admitted that she had fallen asleep in the living room with her daughter next to her. When she awakened, she found the child gone and called authorities.
