BUTLER TWP — There was no taking the foot off the gas this time.

Butler used a 12-0 run in the final 5:46 of the first quarter to assume a 12-point lead as it cruised to a 58-22 boys basketball victory over Knoch in the Butler Christmas Tournament championship game Wednesday night.

The Golden Tornado (8-0) won their own holiday tournament for the seventh consecutive time. Bobby Swartwout tallied 20 points and six rebounds to earn tournament MVP honors for the second straight year.

"I'm not the only big man on this team," Swartwout said. "We've got Jeff (Tompkins) and Brian (Jendesky). We're never about one guy. We didn't win this game because of just me."

Knoch (5-2) found that out in a hurry.

Butler had a 33-9 lead with seconds left in the first half, getting points from seven different players during a 28-5 run.

The Tornado lead kept growing, peaking at 58-20 with 1:25 left in the game, in contrast to Tuesday night, when Butler witnessed a 24-point lead get whittled to four.

"Once they got the big lead, we knew we weren't going see a repeat of Tuesday," Knoch coach Chris Andreassi said. "They were going to keep coming at us."

Butler's lead was 50-16 through three quarters, which prompted coach Matt Clement to empty the Tornado bench in the fourth quarter.

"We had to stay on the pedal tonight," Clement said. "It was important to us to put a complete game together.

"The way we ended Tuesday night had a lot to do with the way we started tonight."

Knoch played without veteran power forward Jake McTighe, who will be out at least a week with a high ankle sprain. The Knights lost starting guard Adam Seger to an ankle sprain in the third quarter Wednesday.

"Call it shell-shock, panic, whatever you want. ... We got out of our game on both ends of the floor," Andreassi said. "Some of the things we were doing out there after a while, I don't even know if you can call it basketball."

The Tornado had a 29-20 edge in rebounds and suffered only six turnovers compared to Knoch's 19. Jendesky contributed 10 points off the bench for Butler.

"Tompkins got two fouls early, Jendesky comes in and plays great," Clement said. "That's what this team is about."

Point guard Nate Snodgrass had five assists in joining Swartwout on the all-tournament team. Andrew Wirtz had 10 points and Nathan Junk seven rebounds for Knoch. Both made the all-tournament team as well.

"Even with McTighe out, they have some excellent big men in their lineup," Swartwout said. "It was important to show we have quality big guys, too."
