Lawn mower driver sentenced to jail time

A Petrolia man is going to jail for driving a lawn mower drunk in the spring.

On Thursday, Butler County Judge Timothy McCune sentenced Robert Lee Evans, 55, to five years of probation with the first six months in jail followed by nine months of house arrest on electronic monitoring for driving under the influence.

Evans was charged April 7 and pleaded guilty Dec. 3 to his third offense of driving under the influence. Evans also pleaded guilty to a summary harassment charge for which he must pay a $25 fine.

Evans must also serve 150 hours of community service.

Evans drove a lawn mower onto the property of a Washington Township man and “started causing a disturbance,” police said. Evans told police he drove his lawn mower to the man's house to pick up a bird bath and that he had been drinking. Evan's blood test revealed a blood alcohol concentration of more than .16. The state's legal limit for driving is a blood alcohol concentration of .08.
