SRU wins stunner in OT
ERIE — Different week. Different game. Different result.
Just six days ago, the Slippery Rock University men’s basketball team traveled to the Hammermill Center, fell behind 40-24 at halftime and lost to Gannon University by 13 points.
This time, The Rock was ready, jumping out to a 14-7 lead, then overcoming a nine-point deficit midway through the second half for a dramatic 62-58 overtime win over the Golden Knights in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Tournament quarterfinals Tuesday night.
“We had a different mindset tonight,” said SRU men’s basketball coach Kevin Reynolds. “We had to get our defense on the floor and the guys came out ready to go.”
In the meeting last week, Gannon shot 60 percent from the floor in the first half and 53 percent in the game. Tuesday, The Rock held the Golden Knights to a mere 30-percent shooting night.
“The guys just grinded one out tonight,” Reynolds said. “This is a tough place to win.”
Gannon (22-7) came into the game with a 12-3 record at home this season.
Tabari Perry scored a game-high 19 points for The Rock (21-7) and hit two clutch free throws in overtime to give SRU a 61-58 lead.
Devin Taylor added 16 points and 10 rebounds. His jumper with eight seconds left in regulation tied the game at 50-50 and sent the game into overtime.
“Devin made a big shot,” Reynolds said. “Gerald (Brooks) and Tabari made 4-of-4 free throws down the stretch in overtime and Darious (Clark) hit a big 3. It’s hard to single anyone out because it was a great team effort, a great team win.”
Clark’s 3-pointer — accounting for his only three points in the game — put The Rock up for good at 59-58 with 30 seconds remaining in overtime.
SRU fans flooded the Hammermill Center, bringing back fond memories for Reynolds, who played at Bloomsburg University in the late 1980s and early 90s.
“It was like the old days,” Reynolds said. “I played in this league when teams’ fans traveled like that. When we got down, the fans kept us in the game with their energy. Really, for the past four games, they have been great. They have been our sixth man.”
The Rock will need all the men it can get when it takes on East Stroudsburg in the PSAC semifinals at 5:30 p.m. Friday at Indiana (Pa.) University.
The Warriors (21-5) were ranked No, 9 in the NCAA Division II national poll two weeks ago, but have since slipped down to No. 19.
“They are a heck of a team,” Reynolds said. “They are probably the No. 1 seed in the tournament, the highest-ranked team in the region.”
The win over Gannon Tuesday may have given SRU a spot in the NCAA Division II tournament no matter the outcome against East Stroudsburg.
Reynolds, though, is not thinking that far ahead.
This is the third time in the last five seasons that The Rock has advanced to the conference Final Four.
“We’re trying to win the conference championship first,” he said.
