Giambi heating up for Yankees
Game by game and homer by homer, Jason Giambi is pushing an embarrassing steroids scandal a little further in the background.
Giambi homered for the third straight game and 20-year-old Melky Cabrera singled in his major league debut Thursday night, helping the New York Yankees extend their winning streak to five games with a 7-2 victory over visiting Cleveland.
Giambi, who all but said during a February news conference that he told a federal grand jury in 2003 he had used performance-enhancing drugs, has four home runs, two doubles and a single in his last 10 at-bats. He has raised his batting average to .274, the highest it's been since he went 1-for-2 in the season opener.
"I've worked hard to get to this point," Giambi said. "I'm finally feeling good physically. ... We're clicking pretty good offensively, we're playing great defense, our pitching is really coming around. Hopefully, we're all starting to come together."
He hit his ninth homer leading off the second and had an RBI single in the sixth.
"He's feeling pretty good about himself right now," Yankees manager Joe Torre said.
New York improved to 44-39 and moved within 31/2 games of Boston, the closest the Yankees have been to the AL East lead since the morning of April 23.

By the time their series in Atlanta was over, Derrek Lee's shoulder wasn't the Chicago Cubs' only concern.Their playoff hopes are hurting, too.The Cubs have lost eight in a row for the first time in three years after getting swept by the Braves in a doubleheader Thursday. "It was a tough day, a tough trip."And it may not get better too quickly. The Cubs move on to Florida, where they are set to face Dontrelle Willis (13-3) in Friday night's series opener.
