IN BRIEF

TYRONE — The Butler equestrian team competed in the Grier School horse show in Tyrone last weekend and had riders place in numerous events.

Sarah Stovar placed sixth in novice flat, Katherine Holupka fourth and Miranda Stoner fifth in junior varsity beginner flat. Jamie Mager was third in future novice over fences and fourth in future novice flat. Shannon Stovar was fourth and fifth, respectively, in those same two events.

Holupka qualified for the Zone 2 Finals slated for March 27 at Alfred University in Alfred, N.Y. The equestrian team's next competition is Dec. 5 at Alfred.

The seventh-grade Western PA Ballers traveling girls basketball team placed second in a tournament last weekend in Franklin.All of the team's players attend Butler Junior High. They include Lindsay Michaels, Montana Vanderzee, Taylor Stobert, Alyssa DiPippa, Megan Paul, Ciarra Lawrence, Ronni Guiney, Shelby Campbell, Julia Baxter and Kalynn Callihan. Dave Peters is the coach.

CLARION — Union High graduate and Clarion University women's basketball senior guard Bethany Koch was named the PSAC West Player of the Week after leading the Golden Eagles to recent wins over Bowie State (73-50) and Alderson-Broaddus (71-63).Koch combined to record 44 points and 19 rebounds in the two victories.

EAST STROUDSBURG — Slippery Rock University forward Jeremy Deighton was named the 2009 Daktronics NCAA Division II Atlantic Region Men's Soccer Player of the Year, joining five teammates who also made the all-region team.The senior finished the season with 21 goals and seven assists in leading the squad to a PSAC Championship and the regional finals.Rock defenders Thomas Pool and Patrick Conley joined Deighton on the first team. The duo helped SRU to limit opponents to 20 goals in 23 games and scored three goals apiece.Goalie Greg Blum and midfielders Toby Bowser and Benjamin Lloyd were tabbed for the second team.

TARENTUM — Butler Cubs boxer Donovan Malovich, 10, won a unanimous decision over Bailey Robinson of Eastside Gym of Pittsburgh Saturday.Malovich is now 6-1.Rick Hartwell (1-1) lost a split decision to Russell Brletrick of James 5:16 of Tarentum.
