Lake Arthur hosting 23rd annual
FRANKLIN TWP — Entries have been slow to come in thus far for the 23rd annual Butler Eagle County Amateur golf tournament.
Then again, that's par for the course.
“This is the way it always goes,” tournament committee member Rob Voltz said. “We always get a late push in that final week.
“I can tell you this. The golf course is in absolutely beautiful condition. It's ready to go.”
The course is Lake Arthur Golf Club, which is hosting the Eagle Amateur Aug. 13. Tee times are available at 7:45 a.m. and 1:15 p.m. for the 18-hole stroke play event.
Voltz said 55 golfers have registered thus far “and we're looking for 110 more. I fully expect to fill the field or come very close.”
There were 166 golfers registered for last year's rain-shortened Eagle Amateur at Cranberry Highlands. Lake Arthur last hosted the event in 2014 and 164 golfers played in that event.
Some notable names already registered this year include five-time Eagle Amateur champion Sean Knapp and former women's division champions Jane Wymer, Jenna Rinker and Paige Scott. Donna McClymonds has also registered.
Scott won the women's title last year. Rinker won it in 2014 at Lake Arthur, finishing just two strokes behind overall champion Mike Marron.
“I'd love to see 20 or more women in this year's field. It'd be great to see that division grow,” Voltz said.
Wymer is an eight-time Butler Country Club women's champion. BCC did not hold a womem's tourney last year. Wymer won the title in 2015.
“I'm just thankful I'm able to play in the (Eagle Amateur) event this year,” Wymer said. “It's been a while.”
Wymer was scheduled to play in the rained out afternoon session last year. She was unable to register the previous two years.
“I've got four teenagers, including two getting ready for college,” she said. “The time isn't always there. But it's working out this year.
“It's great that some of the top women are signing up. You always want to go up against top competition. I haven't played Lake Arthur since I was a teenager myself, so it's been a while.”
Entry forms are available in the Butler Eagle, at the Lake Arthur and Oakview golf courses and on a Facebook page that can be found by searching “Butler Eagle County Amateur.”
Voltz is the defending overall champion while Bob Yuhas won the seniors division a year ago. He has played in all 22 previous Eagle Amateurs and qualified for the senior division for the first time last year.
