2 newcomers win seats on council in Prospect
PROSPECT — Two newcomers and an incumbent who was appointed to the board won election to the borough council Tuesday.
Democrat Chad Green Sr. and Republican Eric Hilliard will join the seven-person board in January, while incumbent Democrat Mary Lou Harmon will keep her seat.
According to the unofficial results, Hilliard led the field with 174 votes, Green got 143 and Harmon got 142. They defeated Republican Paul Braunstein, who got 133 votes, and former council member Edward Robinson, who got 96 votes. There were 82 write-in votes cast.
Harmon was appointed to the board in 2013 after the death of her husband, Jim, who had been on the board for six years. She finished the two years remaining on his second term.
She has lived in Butler County her whole life and in Prospect since 1968.
She said she ran for election to continue working on some of the borough’s projects like the sewer system and economic development.
“We’d like to see the ability to get some growth in the borough. We’re working on that, trying to keep things moving forward for the community,” she said.
Green has lived in the borough for 30 years and is retired from AK Steel.
He had never run for office before and was happy that the voters supported him.
“I was kind of shocked,” he said.
He said he has some learning to do about local government, but knows he will be working on the sewer authority.
“I often wondered how that all works, so I decided to get involved with it,” he said about the borough government.
Hilliard could not be reached for comment late Tuesday night.
Board members Pete Bryan and David Stellfox did not run for re-election.
