Tornado hockey opens season with a win

Winner of only three games last season, the Butler hockey team opened the 2007-08 campaign with a 6-2 victory over Hempfield Monday night.

Beau Bechtel had two goals and an assist while Mavrik Goepfert added a pair of goals for the Golden Tornado. Chris Glover and Zach Pennington also scored for Butler.

Pat Wellner had two assists for the Tornado. R.C. Double, Tanner Master, Dave Wolfe, Warren Shultz and Josh Elsass had one assist each.

Tim Smith stopped 27 of 29 shots on goal.

Butler plays Thursday at 9 p.m. at Upper St. Clair.

Grove City senior DerekForese shot a 79 to finish tied for 40th after the second day of the PIAA Championships at Heritage Hills Golf Resort in York.Greg Orlando of Erie Cathedral Prep won the tournament at 3-under par.

<B>Grove City 3, Wilmington 1 — </B>The Eagles trailed 1-0 at halftime before rallying to victory Monday. Jordan Nichols scored the tying goal while Shaun Barr added two goals.Justin Gildersleeve was the winning goalkeeper for Grove City (13-5-1), which hopes to land an at-large bid in the District 10 playoffs.
