ZELIENOPLE — A piece of community history will be preserved as a landmark.

The clock that hangs on the corner of Main and West New Castle Street will be given to the borough.

The clock, which may have originated in the 1920s, is owned by resident Robert Householder, who also owns the building to which it is attached.

Borough council has approved an agreement for Householder to transfer ownership of the clock to the borough for free. Householder suggested the idea to the borough.

“We would gain control of the maintenance and the access to do what we need to do from inside the building,” borough manager Don Pepe said.

The clock’s electrical power source is outside the building, but Pepe said the borough wants to move that inside.

Council said the chimes also may be replaced.

The chimes originally were removed because guests in the hotel portion of the adjacent Kaufman House complained about the noise.

“This is something a lot of people have been thinking about for a long time,” Pepe said.

Householder could not be reached for comment.
