WASHINGTON TWP — The J.M. Beatty Furniture Store on Oneida Valley Road is adding to both its warehouse and showroom space.

Chad Beatty, one of the store's family owners, said the expansion is in response to growing sales.

"We need the space," he said.

First they will build a 200-foot-long warehouse, and then move items around on the showroom floor for a 7,000-square-foot addition to the stores showroom.

The current showroom is 45,000 square feet.

Chad Beatty's great-grandfather, Joe, opened the furniture store in 1914.

The family recently added the store's fifth Beatty generation when Chad Beatty's son joined the sales force.

Chad, his father, Joe, and his grandfather, Cecil, all work at the store with other family members.

There at 15 employees.

CRANBERRY TWP — Westinghouse Electric has appointed Michael Sweeney to be vice president and deputy general counsel, Westinghouse Legal and Contracts, Environment, Health and Safety.Most recently he was assistant general counsel, Westinghouse Nuclear Services and International.Prior to joining Westinghouse in 2005, he was a partner in the Pittsburgh-based law firm of Pietragallo Gordon Alfano Bosick & Raspanti, and he previously held positions with the Law Department of CBS, formerly Westinghouse Electric.Sweeney will work from the Cranberry Township headquarters.

Attorney James Kraus has been appointed to the American Bar Association Criminal Justice Section White Collar Crime Committee mid-Atlantic region Subcommittee.He is a partner with Pietragallo Gordon Alfano Bosick & Raspanti law firm of Pittsburgh, and he lives in Butler.He is a former city council member.

PITTSBURGH — Butler County is the only county in Western Pennsylvania to have housing prices rise in July.According to REALSTATS, which collects and analyzes public records concerning the real estate market, the county's median home price increased from $175,000 to $190,000.More homes sold in the county than any other county in the region, going from 188 in July 2009 to 213 for July 2010.

CRANBERRY TWP — Maureen Cable is the new manager of JoS. A. Bank Clothiers in its Streets of Cranberry store on Route 19.Cable had been the manager at the company's store at the Mall at Robinson store in Robinson Township, Allegheny County.

BUTLER TWP — Butler County Community College named Butler architect Alva Hill an honorary professor as part of the 2010 Convocation Thursday in the Succop Theater on the main campus.For the past 14 years, Hill has devoted his time to the college's architectural design students.Hill is the co-founder of the international architectural firm Burt Hill and recently chaired the Butler Downtown Revitalization Committee.Each fall semester, Hill gives individual design critiques to the sophomore students enrolled in Design I. He does the same in the spring for freshman students in Architectural Drawing classes."The contribution that Alva has brought to our students, these communities and this college cannot be measured," said Joseph Vaughn, professor of Science and Technology.
