FTC offers scam refund program
The Federal Trade Commission said consumers who lost money to scammers who had them pay through Western Union’s money transfer system between Jan. 1, 2004 and Jan. 19, 2017, can file a claim to get their money back at FTC.gov/WU before Feb. 12.
Among scams involved were fraudulent lottery and prizes, family emergencies, advance-fee loans and online datings.
The refund program follows a settlement with Western Union, which agreed to pay $586 million to resolve charges brought by the FTC and U.S. Department of Justice in 2017.
