Programs at Moraine, McConnells Mill announced

The following outdoor programs have been scheduled for Moraine and McConnells Mill state parks:

Friday, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. — Sights and Sounds of Spring. Meet at the Pleasant Valley Non-Motorized Launch Area on the South Shore of Moraine State Park for a 1.9 mile hike with a park naturalist on the short-loop Sunken Garden Trail. The woods are thawing and coming alive. Wear sturdy hiking boots and dress for the weather.

April 16, 10 a.m. to noon — Volunteer Kickoff. Meet at the Kildoo Pavilion in McConnells Mill State Park. Learn how to get involved by volunteering at either Moraine or McConnells Mill state parks. Last year’s highlights will be discussed and participants will learn what to expect in the upcoming season. New and seasoned volunteers are welcome.

April 21, 7 to 9 p.m. — Woodcock Walk. Meet at Pavilion 7 at McDanels Boat Launch Area on the North Shore of Moraine State Park. Join local bird enthusiasts in pursuit of one of the most unusual birds found in Pennsylvania: the woodcock, also known as the timberdoodle, night partridge, big-eye, bogsucker and mudsnipe. Park naturalists and local members of the Bartramian Audubon Society will search for the woodcocks to see their spring mating ritual performing aerial acrobatics. April 22, 1 to 3 p.m. — Wildflowers of Hells Hollow, Shaffer Road in McConnells Mill State Park. Experience the beauty of McConnells Mill with a walk in the lovely Hells Hollow Trail. Despite the name, it is one of the most charming places to experience the wildflowers in the park. Join park staff for a mile stroll on an easy trail starting at the Hells Hollow parking lot. Dress for the weather, take your own water and wear sturdy footwear.

April 23, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. — Earth Day Spring Clean-up Day. Meet at the park office on the South Shore of Moraine State Park to help celebrate Earth Day. Help the park look its best. Take sturdy shoes, work clothes, work gloves and a friend.There are projects for all ability levels and the work party will be on, rain or shine. For those with a large group of volunteers such as Cub Scouts or Girl Scouts, contact Mike Shaffer at 724- 368-8811 to discuss appropriate projects for your group's numbers and abilities.
