Moraine State Park lost power and some trees in last week’s storm, but management has things mostly restored.

Dustin Drew, park manager, said Wednesday that all of the park’s roads had been reopened. Power was fully restored to the park late Monday evening, he said. None of the fallen trees struck any buildings or other structures.

“There is still a bit of cleanup to do,” Drew said.

It may seem that power-outages wouldn’t affect something as nature-oriented as a park, but outages were consequential for Drew’s team.

The park produces its own drinking water. Water supplies were running low before power was restored, but they managed, he said. Several generators were employed to run the park’s wastewater pumps.

The park remained open throughout the weekend.

“We saw people out taking photos Friday,” Drew said. “Hunters have been here steadily.”

Some cabin rentals had to be canceled as a result of the outages, but the buildings were reopened midweek. People often rent the cabins for Thanksgiving meals.

Drew said, “This is probably the worst storm I’ve experienced since I’ve been here.”

He’s been at the park for five years. Some of the park’s old-timers agreed.

Seasonal workers had their last day Wednesday. Drew was thankful the storm came before the extra help left for the winter.
