Knoch's Jones gets 2nd place

PITTSBURGH — Abby Jones managed a quadruple-play during Thursday's WPIAL Class AA Girls Swimming Championships at the University of Pittsburgh's Trees Pool.

Knoch's sophomore swam the 200-yard freestyle in one minute, 57.42 seconds. She earned a medal with a state-qualifying second-place finish. It also was a personal-best time that took down the school record.

“Coming in, I was just hoping to get a time below 1:59,” said Jones. “I felt good in the pool and just told myself that I had to keep going strong. I'm very happy with how things turned out.”

Jones entered the event seeded seventh, but bested the entire field except for Shady Side Academy's Caroline Colville, who won with a time of 1:56.69.

“She didn't get to the medal stand last year (placing ninth),” said Knoch coach Rick Hassler of Jones. “I'm very excited for her.”

Jones was not alone in setting a new Knights' standard. Freshman Brooke Zukowski broke the record in the 200 individual medley, managing a time of 2:09.54.

“I spent a lot of time on my underwater technique,” Zukowski said. “The (butterfly and backstroke) are my weaker strokes. I'm pretty happy with the way my season has gone.”

With a trip to the state meet in her back pocket, Zukowski may soon better the standard she just set.

“I think we can get her to go faster,” Hassler said.

Both Jones and Zukowski helped earn another medal for Knoch when they swam legs of the 200 medley relay, along with Hannah Shoemaker and Rachael Wittmer. The team placed eighth at 1:56.87.

Freeport's Bria Otwell is headed to states after finishing third in the 200 IM (2:10.15). Teammate Zoe Pawlak, a sophomore, finished sixth in the 50 freestyle, breaking her own school record with a time of 24.59.

Seneca Valley freshman Ali Kozlina just missed out on an automatic state berth by placing fourth in the 50 freestyle (24.17). Her effort will be matched against the other non-automatic times across the state. If it ends up in the top 16 in that field, she will swim in the PIAA event at Bucknell University.

“I'm hoping my time gets me there,” she said. “I've been working a lot on my breathing and my turns in practice. I still have to improve, but I'm pleased with how I did.”
