Leo J. Miller
Leo J. Miller, 88, of Butler died Thursday morning at the Lowrie House in Butler.
Born Aug. 12, 1922, in Herman, he was a son of the late William E. and Luella C. (McLaughlin) Miller.
He worked as a lineman for the Armco Steel plant in Butler for 42 years until his retirement.
Leo was a member of the St. Paul Roman Catholic Church in Butler.
He had enjoyed woodworking, as he made cabinets, kitchens, altars and Bible racks for various Catholic churches in Butler.
He had coached his daughters' softball teams and prior to World War II, he was a pitcher for the St. Mary baseball team in Herman.
A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in France and Germany with the 116th Squadron.
Surviving are his son, Ronald G. Miller and his wife, Sue, of Natrona Heights; a daughter, Patricia L. Barger and her husband, Richard, of Hummelstown; 12 grandchildren, Michael (Sara) Oligee, Kevin (Marcie) Oligee, Jennifer (Sean) Branham, Keli (Jesie) Albertson, Bradley (Bethany) Barger, Angela Barger, William Barger, Catherine (Eric) Altenburger, Benjamin Barger, Thomas Barger, David (Nicole) Vavro and Daniel Vavro; 16 great-grandchildren; a son-in-law, David G. Vavro of Butler; and a sister, Dorothy Schnur of Herman.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Madalene F. (Denny) Miller, who he married, June 8, 1948, and who died April 2, 1988; a daughter, Marian F. Vavro; a grandson, Jonathan P. Barger; four brothers, Ted, Harold, John and his Leo's twin brother, Charles Miller; and two sisters, Mary McDeavitt and Rose Convery.
<B>Miller </B>— Friends of Leo J. Miller, who died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2011, will be received at the <B>Geibel Funeral Home</B>, 201 E. Cunningham St., Butler, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Monday at 10 a.m. at the St. Paul Roman Catholic Church, 128 N. McKean St., Butler. The Rev. Steven V. Neff, pastor, will officiate. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Butler.The St. Paul Women and Christian Mothers will meet at 9:40 a.m. Monday at the church to recite the rosary.Information also is available at www.geibelfuneralhome.com.
