Butler bowlers get sweep vs. MarsThe Butler boys and girls bowling teams opened the season Wednesday with 7-0 victories over Mars at Mars Lanes.In the boys' match, Golden Tornado freshman Chris Huff paced the lineups for both teams with a 223 single game and a 519 series.Daniel Schell led the Planets with a 486 series.Butler's girls received a high game of 193 from junior Mercedes Belch, who also rolled a 555 series. Her teammate, Ashley McCue, added a 498 series.Mars' Nicole Blyth had a 472 series.
BC3 women top Jamestown, 77-74The Butler County Community College women’s basketball team outscored Jamestown (N.Y.) Community College 47-26 in the second half to post a 77-74 win Wednesday night.Julia Baxter’s triple-double of 35 points, 18 rebounds and 10 blocks led the way.Christina Davis added 21 points, 11 rebounds and six assists for the Pioneers (6-4).Men’s BasketballDespite 26 points and 10 rebounds out of Garret McHenry, BC3 dropped a 96-76 decision to Jamestown.Brendan Record scored 16 points and Chris Pipkin 12 for the Pioneers (0-12).
Ex-Kentucky coach Gillispie retiresRANGER, Texas — Former Kentucky basketball coach Billy Gillispie has retired, citing health concerns as he stepped aside as coach at a Texas junior college.The 57-year-old Gillispie said in a text message to The Dallas Morning News that he's been battling high blood pressure since the summer. The former Texas A&M and Texas Tech coach said he is following the advice of doctors by leaving early in his second season at Ranger College.Gillispie was a rising star in the coaching profession after quick rebuilding jobs at UTEP and Texas A&M, leading to the Kentucky job in 2007.
NHL enforcer Scott ends careerTORONTO — John Scott, the NHL enforcer who made an unlikely run to the NHL's All-Star weekend last season, has retired.“It has been a hell of a ride. But I'm done,” Scott said in an article published in The Players' Tribune.The 34-year-old Scott made headlines last season when he was voted into the All-Star tournament. He played for the Arizona Coyotes for part of the season and still served as Pacific Division captain after being traded to the Montreal Canadiens and demoted to the AHL.
