Taylor leads SRU to PSAC tourney

Senior Devin Taylor recorded his 11th double-double of the season with 18 points and 13 rebounds Saturday as the Slippery Rock University men’s basketball team routed Clarion University 87-66.

The win locked up a spot in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference tournament for The Rock (17-9, 14-8).

It is the second straight season in which SRU has advanced to the conference tournament and the third time in four years under coach Kevin Reynolds.

Four Rock players scored in double digits in the win.

Torrence Timothy scored 15 points and Tommy Kelly added 14 for Slippery Rock. Aubin Reeves pitched in 11 points and seven assists.

The Rock bench outscored Clarion 35-18.

SRU will travel to Mercyhurst for the first round of the PSAC tournament Tuesday.

Women’s BasketballDanielle Smith scored 14 points and added 15 rebounds as The Rock toppled Clarion 71-63 Saturday afternoon.It was the season finale for both teams.The Rock (6-20, 3-19) led by as many as 11 early in the second half. Clarion, though, closed the gap to 66-63 with 2:21 remaining before SRU pulled away.

BaseballSenior outfielder Derek Carr was 4-for-4 with three runs scored to help Slippery Rock salvage a doubleheader split against Shippensburg Sunday afternoon with an 11-3 win.The victory was a much-needed one for The Rock (3-5), which had lost five straight games, including a doubleheader sweep at the hands of Shippensburg Saturday by 1-0 and 3-2 scores.SRU dropped the first game Sunday 3-2.The Rock banged out 13 hits in the nightcap after managing just 39 hits in its first seven games.Carr had six hits in eight at-bats between the two games. He was one of four Slippery Rock players with multiple hits in the lone victory.Freshman Geoff Sanner picked up the win on the mound for The Rock.

Track and FieldFreshman Janine Powis broke a Slippery Rock University record in the mile with a time of 4 minutes, 59.63 seconds to help The Rock women’s indoor track and field team to a second-place finish at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championships over the weekend.The Rock was in first place after Saturday, but was edged by Shippensburg, which won its third straight PSAC title.The Rock men also finished second, its best finish at the PSAC championships since 2008.Dan Hedglin paced the finish with a championship in the 60-meter hurdles.Shippensburg won the men’s title as well for the third straight season.Slippery Rock High graduate Ethan Geisler had a strong showing, placing seventh in the 60 hurdles and running a leg of the 1,600-meter relay, which placed fourth a week after breaking the school record.
