Brady Twp. to advertise for open positions

BRADY TWP — More than 30 residents crowded into the Brady Township building Monday night to watch its remaining two supervisors accept the resignations of four township employees and vote to advertise for five positions.

Supervisors Robert McConnell and Ron Staiger scheduled the special meeting to accept resignations of supervisor Kenneth Hertzog, secretary treasurer Kristina McCullough and assistant secretary Ann Stockart.

“I’d like to thank Ken for the service he’s given us here the past eight years,” McConnell said.

Hertzog also was a member of the planning commission and the emergency management coordinator.

The resignations were approved by the supervisors with the intention of filling them.

The position of supervisor has to be appointed at a township meeting April 20, according to solicitor Ron Coyer. Supervisors voted that those interested in the positions of supervisor, secretary treasurer, planning commission member and emergency coordinator to turn in their resumes by 4 p.m. April 18.

Interviews for prospective supervisors are to be held April 19 and before the April 20 meeting.

The next appointed supervisor would take over Hertzog’s term, occupying it until the end of 2023. Coyer said applicants must have lived in Brady Township for a year and be a registered voter in order to qualify.

During the meeting, McConnell also accepted the resignation of township auditor Joe Sincar. Whomever fills the auditor position would serve the remainder of Sincar’s term through the end of 2023.

The position of assistant secretary will not be included in the advertisement, McConnell said.

“We’re going to wait and see if we need (one),” he said.

Supervisors voted that Michelle Thompson, secretary of Concord Township, would take on the secretarial duties of Brady Township until the position is filled permanently. Thompson is to be paid $18 per hour.

Supervisors also voted to change the locks and pass codes on township building, appoint the new secretary as the right-to-know officer, once they are hired, and to pay for the bonding of the temporary secretary.

Residents asked if they could require the incoming secretary to pay for the bonding process should they fail to serve the township for a year. Coyer replied that the township cannot require them to pay back the fee of nearly $500.

Several residents commented that the township cannot retain a secretary because the secretary was being harassed by other community members, while others remarked on the amount of community representation at the special meeting.

“It’d be nice if we had this many people at meetings monthly,” one resident said. “If you can encourage younger citizens to get involved, we wouldn’t have some of the problems we have.”

The next township meeting will take place at the township building, 141 West Liberty Road, at 7 p.m. April 20.
