KARNS CITY — The Karns City School Board voted to keep any property tax increase below the state-mandated maximum for the 2017-18 school year.

The board voted Thursday night to keep any tax increase at or below 3.6 percent of its tax rates, which affect three counties: Butler, Armstrong and Clarion.

In Butler County, the district’s tax rate is 89.12 mills, meaning any tax increase in the county would be limited at 3.2 mills, according to Superintendent Eric Ritzert.

A mill generates $1 of tax revenue for each $1,000 of a property’s assessed value.

The district’s average assessed value of a house in Butler County is $11,716, meaning the average tax payment for the 2016-17 school year is $1,044, according to Deana Turner, director of business affairs.

Ritzert said the board has yet to determine if taxes will be increased and by what amount.

At the Thursday night board meeting, the board also unanimously reelected Bryan Fleeger to serve as board president for his sixth year and Josh Price to be vice president for the third year.
