TULSA, Okla. — Butler wrestler Ana Malovich, coming off a 15-5 freshman season for the Golden Tornado, won eight of her nine matches while competing for Pennsylvania at the USA Nationals girls tournament in Oklahoma.
Malovich helped her team place third in its respective pool. The tournament runs through Saturday.
EUGENE, Ore. — Knoch graduate and University of Arizona junior Jordan Geist advanced to the finals in the shot put at the U.S. Olympic track and Field trials Friday night.Geist threw 19.72 meters to make the field of 12 in the finals.There, Ryan Crouser stole the show.Crouser screamed the moment the shot put left his hand. Before he even saw it land, he raised his arms to celebrate.He didn't need an official measurement to know it was a world record.Crouser, the defending Olympic champion, broke a 31-year-old world record with his mark of 76 feet, 8 1/4 inches (23.37 meters). He won the competition by beating world champion Joe Kovacs, with Payton Otterdahl taking third.The outdoor mark of 75-10 1/4 (23.12) had been owned by Randy Barnes since May 20, 1990. Five months ago, Crouser shattered Barnes' world indoor record mark at 74-10 1/2 (22.82 meters), and the thinking was it would only be a matter of time before the outdoor mark fell, as well.When the 28-year-old's fourth of six tries on a mild, sunshiny evening at Hayward Stadium plunked into the dirt, well beyond where any other mark had been made, a collective gasp came from the quarter-filled stands.About a half-minute passed while officials checked the distance. When it came up on the board, he was mobbed by his competitors over near the circle.
WASHINGTON, Pa. — Slippery Rock resident Brady Brown drove three horses to victory during harness racing action Thursday at The Meadows.Brown won with 4-year-old mare Ideal Woman in a $9,500 Conditioned Pace, with 8-year-old mare Casey T in a Claiming Handicap Trot and with 4-year-old gelding No Name Yankee in a $9,600 Conditioned Trot.Elsewhere on the card, 2-year-old filly Dallas Bi, owned and trained by Mitchell York of Cranberry Township, won a race, as did driver Shawn Johnston of Evans City.Johnston guided Start A Ruckus to victory in a $7,500 Conditioned Pace. Johnston trains and owns the horse as well. The win was the first for Start A Ruckus in 43 career starts.
ATLANTA — Seth Curry hit six 3-pointers and scored 24 points and the top-seeded Philadelphia 76ers avoided elimination in the Eastern Conference semifinal series by beating the Atlanta Hawks 104-99 in Game 6 on Friday night.The 76ers overcame Trae Young's 34-point effort to force Game 7 on Sunday night in Philadelphia.Tobias Harris also had 24 points, making four free throws in the final 13 seconds to protect the lead. Joel Embiid added 22 points and 13 rebounds.Young's long 3, just before the shot clock expired, cut Philadelphia's lead to 94-93. Embiid answered with a basket. Free throws by Embiid and Tyrese Maxey, who scored 16 points off the bench, pushed the advantage to 98-93.Danilo Gallinari's jam with 20 seconds remaining cut the lead to three points.After rallying from deficits of 18 and 26 points in their last two wins, the Hawks finally started strong. Atlanta led by 12 points in the first period, and never trailed in the first half.
