New bunch on deck
HERMAN — With another season comes an entirely new group of players, but Summit Academy coach Steve Sherer still enjoys turning them into a team.
With one player back from the varsity (Isaiah Davis) and another from the junior varsity (Gabriel Myers), Sherer is starting from scratch.
"We still have some work to do," said Sherer. "When you take a group of kids mostly who have not played before, it takes a while to jell.
"We're still developing guys at their individual positions. ... After the first week, it's still too early to tell. Hopefully we can improve over the next week," he added.
That development includes at quarterback, where three players — Douglas House, Jaivon Williams and Quran Reaves — are competing for the job. Each brings a little something different to the offense, according to Sherer.
Last season, Mike Martin passed for 536 yards and completed 41 of 77 passes for four touchdowns and six interceptions.
Martin was one of quarterbacks who threw for more than 100 yards to pace the Knights' offense, so the coaching staff may be able to utilize that advantage.
At running back, Devon Boyd has been standing out after the Aug. 22 scrimmage against Serra.
"Boyd is showing signs he can run," said Sherer. "We have more runners than passers. They're still developing as passers."
Maurice Houston and Naiim Satcher will man the flanker position, while Richard Hitch and Sean McDonald will play at the strong side end and Brandon Brock and Myers will play at the weak side end.
"I think we have a pretty decent group of receivers,' said Sherer. "Probably our strongest point is center with Raimonte Gaston."
The Knights, who have 51 players on this year's roster, including 26 seniors, have had a few injuries on the offensive line, but the play of tackle Anthony Ptomey has been a plus.
McDonald and Troy Vickers have played strong at inside linebacker while Gaston and Houston will key the defense at end and safety, respectively.
"(McDonald), in the scrimmage against Serra, did well. I was extremely impressed with him and Troy Vickers did pretty well," said Sherer.
"I think, athletically, we have the people, but, as a group, they still have to develop. At the scrimmage against Serra, we tackled well. At times, we didn't fill a gap or we missed a tackle.
"The kids still need to be more comfortable and understand the scheme fully. Once they do that, the kids will feel much better," he added.
