Steelers supporters dissect team's current woes

CENTERTWP— While the Pittsburgh Steelers are 2-6 and seemingly headed for a disappointing season, Butler County fans have not lost their enthusiasm for the team.

A long line of Steelers fans waited patiently to have items signed by linebacker James Harrison and defensive back Bryant McFadden Saturday at Clearview Mall.

While waiting, a few fans offered their opinions on Steelers football:

•

Why do the Steelers have only two wins so far?John Scott (Slippery Rock):"Turnovers are the biggest problem."

Doug Blain (Parker):"Turnovers and some questionable officiating. If we don't keep giving the ball away, we'd only have two losses right now."

Jack Riley (Slippery Rock):"Bill Cowher has made some bad decisions this year, mainly with Ben Roethlisberger. He should have given the guy a break and sat him for a couple of games. Let Charlie Batch start."

Chris Durish (Meridian):"The offensive line is a big part of it. Those guys haven't been the same."

Katie Crawford (Mount Chestnut):"Ben Roethlisberger being hurt and the team having some new players ... They just haven't come together."

Tyler Atkinson (Butler):"Big Ben, too many interceptions."

John Pithers (Butler):"Ben didn't play in the preseason and they miss the motivation from Jerome Bettis."

Michael Boyer (Sigel):"Too many mistakes — way too many — and the lack of a running game."

Molly McPeak (Portersville):"A lot of little problems have added up to big problems."•

Are the Steelers dead in terms of the playoff picture?Tammy Weiland (Butler):"They still have a chance. Anything can happen."

Michael Boyer (Sigel):"They're done. They would have to improve about 100-fold, and I don't see that happening."

Joe Friel (Butler):"I won't put a fork in them yet. They have what it takes to do it."

Michael George (Boyers):"If they let Batch give Big Ben some competition, use Najeh Davenport instead of Willie Parker and go back to a power running game, maybe something can happen."

Minh Nguyen (Cranberry Township):"If they win every game — maybe."

Jack Riley (Slippery Rock):"They've pulled miracles before. Why not another one?"•

Who is your favorite Steeler?John Scott (Butler):"Hines Ward. I like how he plays the game. He always seems to be enjoying it."

Chris Durish (Meridian):"I still like Ben Roethlisberger. Look what he did for us in his first two years."

Katie Crawford (Mount Chestnut): "Troy Polamalu. He's good. He's just good."

Minh Nguyen (Cranberry Township):"Bryant McFadden or Deshea Townsend. They're not really big guys, but they're fast and strong. And we've been playing great defense.

Andrew McIntosh (Butler):"Joey Porter. He's awesome. He's intense. He's the toughest man around."

Michael George (Boyers):"Joey Porter or Troy Polamalu. One's a trash-talker, the other's all over the field."

Nick Brown (Slippery Rock):"Troy Polamalu. He's a really great defensive player and an awesome guy."

John Pithers (Butler):"Heath Miller. He's just a class act. He scores a touchdown or makes a big catch and hands the ball to the official. He doesn't do any of that stupid dancing."

Molly McPeak (Portersville):"Hines Ward. He's always smiling and he plays with his heart. It's easy to see how much he loves playing football."

Michael Boyer (Sigel):"Dan Kreider. He's a mud man. He doesn't run the ball or get the glory, but he crushes people at the line of scrimmage on every play. You can't win without guys like that."

Aidan Grossman (Barkeyville):"Big Ben. He can throw the ball."

Joe Friel (Butler):"James Harrison. Anybody who would throw down a Cleveland Browns fan in the middle of the field is a friend of mine."•

Have you attended many Steeler games over the years?

John Scott (Slippery Rock):"I'll get to a game or two a year. You can always find tickets on eBay."

Doug Blain (Parker):"I bought three tickets to a game for $180 on eBay. ... That's not bad. It's not so hard to buy from scalpers before the game. We've never failed to get tickets that way."

Joe Friel (Butler):"If you wait (ticket scalpers)out, you can get a good price, sometimes at less than face value if you wait until after the game starts."

Chris Durish (Meridian):"I'm a season-ticket holder with three people, so I get to two or three games a year that way."

Katie Crawford (Mount Chestnut):"I've never been to a game, but I'd love to go. That would be a big thing for me.
