Joshua Johnson, a sixth grade student at Knoch Middle School, reads “A day in the World of Leonard” to preschoolers. Johnson wrote the book using the website, Storybird.com, an online platform that compiles groups of artwork for students to write their own picture books, chapter books and poems.

The project was part of the Discovering Literature class taught by Amy Bocci, and it helps the students learn to use vocabulary words like “aloof,” “fleeting” and “pensive.”

Bocci said the students had to write books with enough context clues so the younger children would be able to understand the books.

Bocci picked six books written by students, including books by Mackenzie Protos, Alyssa Sanko, Jackson Pacek, Evan Chess and Ashley Walters.

“Every year, a large percentage of students say that this is their absolute favorite project,” Bocci said. “It’s a great way to get kids to write because sometimes students are reluctant to write.”
