BUTLER TWP — Police have identified the driver of a sport utility vehicle that crashed Wednesday morning into the side of a building next to the Morgan Car Wash on New Castle Road.

John Wuycheck, 67, of Pittsburgh told officers that he was getting his vehicle washed just before 11 a.m. and believed it was in park, according to a Butler Township police report.

“His foot hit the gas,” the report said, “which accelerated the vehicle through the closed bay door.”

Wuycheck was unable to hit the brakes and the SUV smashed through a fence and into the building that houses six apartments and the Butler Cleaners and Coin Laundromat.

Witnesses, including at least one tenant, rushed to help the driver, who they say was bleeding on the top of his head. A Butler Ambulance Service crew treated him for the minor injury. He refused further treatment.

Police said the building was evacuated and inspected. It sustained moderate damage to the exterior block wall, according to Chris Switala, township fire marshal.

Switala said the building was determined to be “stable” and tenants, customers and employees were able to return.

Wuycheck's vehicle sustained heavy front-end damage and had to be towed.
