Grove City looks to defend crown
BUTLER TWP — Grove City High School will defend its championship Saturday at the 15th annual ARMSTRONG Academic Challenge at 9 a.m. at Succop Theater, Butler County Community College.
In 2010, Grove City beat Butler in the final round of the competition. Butler took second and Mercer was third.
This year, 15 high schools will compete in the daylong questions-and-answers competition. Questions will cover history, literature, mathematics, science and current events.
The public can attend the contest, which will be televised live beginning at 9 a.m. on Armstrong channels.
From Butler County, Butler and Moniteau students are scheduled to participate. They are:
• Butler: Kathryn Claudy, Amanda Geither, Eleanor Lloyd, Stephanie Girdano, Colin Blackburn and Ben France. Advisor: Charlotte Kelly.
• Moniteau: Roman Weingartner, Clarissa Kimmey, John Klecha, Tim Shearer, Jared Say and Tylyn Early. Advisor: Jeremy Borkowski.
Other schools registered to compete are: Connellsville, Mt. Pleasant, Grove City, Mercer, Commodore Perry in Hadley, Cochranton, Meadville, Saegertown, Conneaut Lake, Lincoln in Ellwood City, Riverside in Ellwood City, Pine Richland in Gibsonia and North Allegheny in Wexford.
Moniteau will go against Cochranton at 9:30 a.m., and Butler will take on Saegertown at 10:30 a.m.
Grove City will face Mercer at noon.
The top teams will take home U.S. Savings Bonds of $200 to $500. In addition, members of the top four teams will each receive a savings bond.
All participating schools will receive a minimum $100 scholarship to be used at the discretion of the school.
