A Butler County man continues to recover from serious injuries suffered last month when a water tanker truck overturned onto his car in Penn Township.

Kevin Koontz, 46, is receiving care, according to a family member, after he was injured in the May 19 crash at Route 8 and Dinnerbell Road.

Penn Township police said the accident happened as Koontz was stopped at the traffic light westbound on Dinnerbell Road. He was driving a 2013 Chevrolet Camaro that he had purchased just weeks earlier.

Koontz and his two daughters, ages 7 and 9, were riding in the car.

Shawn Kepple, 30, of Manorville, Armstrong County, was traveling north on Route 8 and was turning right onto Dinnerbell Road, police said, when he lost control of the truck hauling a tanker full of fresh water that he was taking to a shale fracking well site.

The girls escaped with minor injuries, police said. Their mother came and got them at the crash scene. Kepple also had minor injuries.

Police on May 29 cited Kepple with three traffic violations — driving at an unsafe speed, careless driving and accidents involving an overturned vehicle.

On Monday, he pleaded not guilty to the citations. His traffic hearing was not immediately scheduled at the office of District Judge Sue Haggerty in Saxonburg.

Kepple could not be reached for comment. A telephone message Tuesday to Force Inc. was not returned.
