INDIANAPOLIS — The NCAA said Myles Brand died after battling pancreatic cancer. He was 67.
The university president turned NCAA chief who pushed for tighter academic standards in college sports and took on Bob Knight died Wednesday.
Brand announced he had cancer in January at the NCAA convention and continued to run the organization's day-to-day operations.
He became the first university president to run college sports' largest governing body, and worked to change the perception that wins supersede academics in college athletics.
It's the first time a sitting NCAA president has died.
SV lacrosse players help summer team
Pittsburgh Select Lacrosse fielded its first team this summer with a roster comprised of players from 10 different school districts.
Seneca Valley players Sam Struss, Paige Corathers, Kelly Cundiff, Morgan Midkiff and Audrey Semel helped PSL post a 9-3-2 record, including the Senior A Division Championship at the Upper Atlantic tournament held in Downingtown, Pa.
CHARLEROI — Grove City College graduate Steven A. Stepanian, a longtime football and basketball coach at Charleroi High, recently was inducted into the Charleroi All-Sports Hall of Fame.A 1922 GCC graduate who died in 1976, Stepanian was 145-59-3 as Charleroi football coach from 1922-45, including WPIAL titles in 1925 and 1936. He coached basketball during those same years and was 203-65 with a WPIAL crown in 1940.Stepanian's son, Leo M. Stepanian, is a practicing attorney in Butler.
CLARION — Slippery Rock High School graduate and Clarion University freshman golfer Jenna Rinker was named PSAC Women's Golfer of the Week.Rinker won the Baldwin-Wallace Invitational by four strokes last weekend, shooting a 73-79-152. The event was her first collegiate tournament.
LATROBE — The West Penn Golf Association edged the Tri-State PGA 9-8. in the 2009 Palmer Cup event Wednesday at Latrobe Country Club.The tournament consisted of 10 morning singles matches and seven afternoon four-ball matches. FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — The NFL assessed $125,000 in fines to the New York Jets and former coach Eric Mangini Wednesday for violating the league's rules on injury reporting with former quarterback Brett Favre last season.The Jets failed to place Favre, now with the Minnesota Vikings, on the injury report during the final month of last season even though he had a torn biceps tendon.The league announced it had fined the Jets $75,000, and Mangini and Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum $25,000 apiece. Mangini now coaches the Cleveland Browns. Last week, Tannenbaum admitted the Jets should have listed Favre as "probable" on their injury reports.Gold medalist netters reuniteTwo-time Olympic gold medalist Misty May-Treanor will return next weekend to the domestic beach volleyball tour, where she will be reunited with longtime partner Kerri Walsh.May-Treanor, who injured her Achilles' tendon while practicing for "Dancing with the Stars" last October, will join Walsh for the Sept. 25-27 AVP World Challenge in Glendale, Ariz. It will be their first competition together in 2009, though they did team up to play Shaquille O'Neal for an episode of the television show "Shaq Vs."Walsh, who teamed with May-Treanor to win at the Athens Olympics and again in Beijing, sat out most of the AVP season after having a baby in the spring. She returned last month and has been playing mostly with Rachel Wacholder.
PITTSBURGH — Pitt senior guard Jermaine Dixon has undergone bone graft surgery on his broken right foot and is expected to be out about two months.Dixon had the operation Wednesday after reinjuring the foot he initially broke in July. Dixon started all 36 games for the Panthers last season, averaging 8.4 points.Pitt, an NCAA regional finalist last season, is likely to be without two of its top returning players for its Nov. 13 opener against Wofford. Redshirt junior forward Gilbert Brown is academically ineligible during the first semester.Dixon's absence might create more playing time for Chase Adams, a 5-foot-11 guard who is eligible immediately. He transferred from Centenary, which is dropping from Division I to Division III.
