Officials say election went smoothly

Voting in Tuesday's mid-term elections went well in Butler County, according to election officials.

Shari Brewer, director of the county's Bureau of Elections, said officials received few complaints between Tuesday and Wednesday.

“There weren't a lot of issues,” Brewer said. “Normal things like people thinking they're registered, and they're not registered.”

Brewer said the bureau is still working out some of the special votes cast, like provisional ballots and additional absentee votes. She said updates with the absentee votes that have been submitted so far have been posted to the unofficial results on the county's Web page. The page was updated at 10 a.m. Wednesday to reflect these changes.

Brewer said absentee voters from overseas and military members have until Tuesday to submit their votes.

“Once we're done with the official computation, then we have to wait five days after that (for certification,)” Brewer said. “We don't start official computation until Friday. It just depends on when we get done with that.”

The updated unofficial results showed 80,021 of the 128,457 Butler County voters cast ballots Tuesday, for a turnout of more than 62 percent.

Brewer said Butler County polls were also prepared for a higher turnout this year.

“I expected a higher turnout than normal, so I prepared my poll workers for that. They prepared to have extra help on hand,” Brewer said. “The polls were steady, but I didn't get any complaints that there were long lines.”

Brewer said election night's smooth operation was thanks to the poll workers.

“The poll workers did a good job,” she said.
