County sports HOF inductions set
BUTLER TWP — The 2014 Butler County Sports Hall of Fame induction class has been announced.
The 1976-77 Mars High School girls basketball team, Marlesse Schlott Hames, Jefferson Dickson, Jeff McAnallen, Terry Henry, Jimmy Stewart, Scott Grinder and the late Steven Napora will be inducted during the HOF’s 49th annual banquet April 26 at the Butler Days Inn.
These latest inductions will swell the Hall of Fame’s membership to 355.
Here is a brief look at this year’s honorees:
1976-77 Mars girlsEntering the Hall in the team category, the Lady Planets posted a 27-1 record in basketball that season, winning the WPIAL and losing in the state championship game.The team’s grade point average was 3.8.
Steven NaporaA 1936 Butler graduate, Napora was the first Golden Tornado golfer to compete and medal in the WPIAL and PIAA tournaments.He won the Butler Country Club championship in 1956, won every BCC tournament at least once and shot his age consecutively for 10 years, from age 72-82.
Terry HenryThe former East Brady and Seneca Valley football coach found plenty of success at both schools. He led the Raiders to three WPIAL playoff appearances and a trip to the district title game in 1989.Henry fashioned a record of 69-16-3 in nine years at East Brady, winning four Clarion County League championships.
Jimmy StewartA 1979 Butler graduate, Stewart went on to win numerous kick-boxing titles, including the IKF world welterweight crown in 2004.He was undefeated as a pro (19-0-4) over a 12-year stretch and is already a member of the United States Martial Arts Hall of Fame and United States Hall of Fame for his martial arts exploits.
Jefferson DicksonA 1993 Knoch graduate, Dickson won the WPIAL and PIAA golf championships in 1991 and 1992 after placing in those tournaments as a sophomore.He went on to golf for the University of North Carolina and played on numerous softball and basketball teams after college.
Jeff McAnallenA 1991 Butler graduate, McAnallen was an offensive lineman for the Golden Tornado who went on to play football at the University of Tulsa.Also a two-time WPIAL shot put champion, McAnallen is a former Butler High head football coach and is currently the school’s assistant athletic director.
Marlesse Schlott HamesA 1992 Seneca Valley graduate, Schlott earned 10 total varsity letters as a softball, soccer and basketball player. She is the Raiders’ all-time leading scorer and rebounder in basketball.Schlott pitched her softball team to the 1992 WPIAL championship and a state runner up finish. She hit .602 and .589 at the plate and went on to play basketball and softball at Penn State Behrend.
Scott GrinderEntering the Hall in the lifetime achievement category, Grinder is a 1972 Seneca Valley graduate who spent 13 years as a professional umpire. He worked four years as a replacement umpire in the major leagues, including a game with inaugural BCSHOF inductee Ed Vargo in Montreal.Grinder became a volunteer board member with Christian Sports International in 1993 and has served as president of that organization since 2005.Tickets for the banquet are available through www.bcshof.com, from any Hall of Fame director or the following outlets: Moses Jewelers at the Clearview Mall, Bill’s Beer Barn, Snack n’ Pack, Parker Appliance in Chicora, Maddalon Jewelers in Zelienople or Saxonburg Drug.
