Suspect ID'd on video
A one-time employee’s limp and tattoos on both of his arms helped identify him as suspect in the theft of money from a Butler business, city police said.
Surveillance video at Battery Warehouse helped charge Matthew L. Garman, 34, of Kittanning.
Police believe Garman used a key on Nov. 8 and 10 to get into the closed store on West Cunningham Street. Once inside he headed to the office where he stole store receipts totaling $380, according to court documents.
Since he was an employee for about two years, Garman knew the store’s routine, documents said. He also knew to keep his back to the security camera during his alleged crimes.
But when store owner Michael Williams watched the video, he recognized the suspect’s arm tattoos. The alleged thief’s distinctive walk was another giveaway.
Garman has a “noticeable limp,” Williams told police, that comes from his prosthetic leg, documents said.
The video evidence was crucial for police to obtain an arrest warrant Tuesday for Garman, who is charged with two counts each of burglary and theft.
