Teams seek different goals in finale

FREEPORT — Freeport is hoping to carry some momentum into the playoffs. Summit Academy is hoping to end the season on a positive note.

That's what both squads will attempt in the regular-season finale, an Allegheny Conference contest set for 7:30 p.m. Friday at Swartz Field.

The Yellowjackets are coming off a 42-0 triumph over West Shamokin, one week after a tough 35-21 loss to Deer Lakes.

Freeport coach John Gaillot said it's vital his team finishes plays against the Knights.

"They're a very athletic team," said Gaillot. "Sometimes they make plays when they look totally stopped. I watched them against Ford City. They were right in it until the end."

The Knights (3-5, 2-4) opened the season at 3-1 but have dropped four consecutive games. They are led by quarterback Andre Williams, who has completed 40-of-79 passes for 617 yards and eight touchdowns.

Williams also has four rushing scores, which leads a balanced rushing attack.

"He keeps plays alive," said Gaillot. "He's elusive. He just has a lot of good moves. He seems pretty accurate. He's buying time and finding the open receiver. He usually makes the first two guys miss."

The Knights' defense has kept them in some games, allowing their opponents an average of 243.9 yards per game.

Freeport (5-3, 4-2) also has relied on a strong defense, limiting opponents to 201.9 yards per game.

"Freeport seems to react and run to the ball well," said Knights coach Steve Sherer. "They get a lot of people around the ball. They have their defense do a 4 front, then the next week a 5. That throws a wrench when you're working with kids that are inexperienced.

"They also like to blitz and cause a lot of problems for offenses," Sherer added.

Freeport's offense is led by sophomore quarterback Brendan Lynch, who's completed 43-of-85 passes for 890 yards, 10 touchdowns and two interceptions.

His top target is Derek Durand (26 catches, 645 yards, six TDs), while the bulk of the ground game is handled by Jake Campbell (100 carries, 574 yards, nine touchdowns), Marcel Ittner (24-297-4) and Lynch (46-248-4).

"Freeport has size, speed and they're well-drilled," said Sherer. "They've done well against a number of teams. As we close the season, we're going to be challenged."
