Scoop seeking perfect picks
The playoffs are almost here.
Well, they are here for two Butler County area teams.
Slippery Rock will open the District 10 3A playoffs Saturday night.
Grove City is on a bye in the District 10 5A playoffs.
For everyone else, it’s the last chance to make an impression.
Speaking of impressions, I am making quite a good one of late.
I had another stellar week, going 10-1 (Summit Academy tripped me up again) and have raised my record to 80-18.
Not bad considering where I started this season.
I have been in playoff form for weeks.
Let’s see if that trend continues.
On to the picks:
Canon-McMillan 37, Butler 16 — The Golden Tornado will try to close the season with a home win. Butler has played well at Art Bernardi Stadium this season.
Seneca Valley 29, Altoona 11 — The Raiders are another team looking to end the year on a positive note.
Mars 28, Knoch 16 — In the PA 228 Rivalry, the Planets are hoping to enter the postseason on the right foot.
Knoch, which was eliminated from postseason consideration last week, will try to be a thorn in Mars’ side again. The Knights have given the Planets fits recently on their home field.
Freeport 25, Valley 19 — The Yellowjackets are a fun team. Quarterback Austin Romanchak is like a high school Doug Flutie (and even kind of looks like him when he’s playing, complete with the No. 7).
Freeport could do some damage in the playoffs as well.
Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic 38, Freedom 12 — Speaking of fun teams, the Trojans fling the ball all over the field and are pretty good at it.
Clearfield 30, Karns City 29 — This game is hard to call because the Gremlins enter the game pretty banged up and it’s unclear just how they will approach it.
Redbank Valley 32, Moniteau 18 — The Warriors are starting to get healthy, but will it be enough?
Ridgway 36, Union/A-C Valley 16 — The Knight Falcons would like nothing more than to end their season on a positive note.
Summit Academy 41, Avella 15 — I hope I get this one right this week. The Knights have been tough for me to predict.
I think they’ll handle Avella, however.
Harbor Creek 16, Slippery Rock 9 — The Rockets served notice last week against Wilmington that they may not be an easy out in the playoffs.
The defense has played well all season and held down a potent Greyhounds attack and the offense showed glimpses as Slippery Rock took a 14-0 lead against Wilmington last week.
Last season, Slippery Rock earned a first-round upset in the playoffs.
Will history repeat?
Scoop is thinking 90 wins this season.
